The Youth Workers’ Association (YWA) acknowledges the current political debate on marriage equality and the potential impact it can have on the wellbeing of members of the LGBTIQ community, particularly young people and children of same-sex relationships. Research has consistently proven that young members of the LGBTIQ community are significantly more likely to experience mental health difficulties.
On behalf of the Board of YWA, we would like to express our support to our members during what might be a stressful time for many youth workers and young people alike. Whereas we do not support the course of action taken by the Commonwealth Government to conduct a voluntary postal survey, would like to encourage everyone to check their enrolment on the check.aec.gov.au website by tomorrow, the 24th of August and to participate in the upcoming voluntary postal survey.
Some hurtful things are already being said about same-sex attracted and gender diverse people and their families as a result of this campaign. If the current debate is distressing you, your loved ones or any of the young people you are working with, please seek support by contacting support services such as QLife, ACON, Lifeline, Minus18, Headspace or
